WxLA, the advocacy initiative for gender justice in landscape architecture, launched their scholarship program in 2019 to reach next-generation practitioners. That first year, they raised more than $30,000 through GoFundMe; with those funds, plus $10,000 of in-kind donations and custom t-shirt sales, the scholarship was off to a roaring start and is still going strong. Since 2019, WxLA has helped 35 emerging professionals attend the ASLA Conference on Landscape Architecture. Those scholars then give back to WxLA by supporting their events and initiatives—including takeovers, workshops and presentations—to advance awareness and empower womxn in the profession.
This year, Tuesday, August 15 is the deadline for nominations and self-nominations for the WxLA Scholarships for the ASLA 2023 Conference on Landscape Architecture, October 27-30 in Minneapolis.
Nominators/applicants are encouraged to submit the name of a colleague or self-nominate. Nominees/applicants must be early to mid-career (in first ten years of practice) landscape architects who do not have access or support to attend the conference otherwise.
Information required to apply include a short overview of the nominee/applicant’s background, education, and professional experience and a description of how the nominee exhibits leadership and why they will benefit from the experience of the conference.
Nominations must be received by August 15, 2023—see the WxLA website for more on the eligibility and application requirements.

For more opportunities, please see ASLA’s RFQs and Opportunities list. Those who wish to share an upcoming event, RFQ/RFP, or call for submissions may submit information online. This scholarship initiative by WxLA is truly inspiring! It’s fantastic to see organizations actively supporting and empowering emerging professionals in the landscape architecture field. The fact that they’ve already helped 35 individuals attend the ASLA Conference is a testament to the impact of such programs. I encourage all eligible early to mid-career landscape architects to consider applying or nominating a colleague. It’s an opportunity not just for personal growth but also for contributing to the advancement of gender equality in our profession. Kudos to WxLA for their ongoing commitment to positive change!
Thanks,
Mary
