"Love water in nature? How about this designed urban park with a wonderful rocky creek and lake in Dongguan, China. Huangqi Hills Greenway Park is a trending spot with locals, especially children who love to get their feet wet. What you may not know is that the creek-lake system also helps dealing with storms.

This semester, the Student Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects at the University of Oklahoma (@ou_scasla) has been busy hosting events dedicated to professional development and fostering camaraderie. Highlights include social gatherings outside the classroom, fundraising initiatives to support their chapter's growth, and insightful educational sessions with industry professionals.

"We all understand that architecture is the practice of creating the habitats where people live, but what about the plants, animals, fungi, and bacteria that also call planet Earth home?

"With heavier rains and more frequent storms, the climate crisis is driving increased flooding across the world. Landscape architects address these challenges, creating community green spaces that double as floodable infrastructure.

"As landscape architects, we design spaces that increase biodiversity in traditionally urban environments. At the FBI Headquarters in Miramar, Florida, we restored 20 acres of wetlands once typical of the region to reduce flooding, capture carbon, and create stronger connections between people and nature.

The Point master plan represents a resilient vision for South Shore Massachusetts’ future coastline. It reduces flooding and responds to sea level rise.

"Marshes naturally protect the shoreline from storms and sea level rise. Waterfront developments along the coast can also be protected by raising the land to meet sea level rise and planting native salt-tolerant plants, mirroring those natural marshes that absorb water much like a sponge does.

Many events featuring landscape architects at COP28 in Dubai will be livestreamed. Recordings will also be available.

Cities can be hubs for biodiversity and create environmental benefits for people.

"The campus landscape master plan at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign positions the university as a leader in restoring native Illinois landscapes. Restored forest and native prairie on the campus supports ASLA Climate Action Plan goals of enhancing biodiversity.
